Ironing board marks on clothes and a slipping cover: practical fixes
Two problems come up again and again with ironing boards: the cover slides around while you work, and clothes come off the board with faint lines or shiny patches. Both are usually fixable. This guide walks through the common causes and practical fixes, and explains when it is time to replace the cover rather than adjust it.
Why does my ironing board cover keep slipping?
A slipping cover is usually the wrong size, or it is not tightened underneath. A cover that is too big for the board cannot pull taut, and a cover with loose or tired elastic will creep as you push the iron back and forth.
Start by checking the size. Take the cover off and measure the bare board: length from the pointed nose to the flat end, width at the widest point. The ROBINAZ cover is listed for UK boards of 125 × 45 cm and 122 × 38 cm — see ironing board covers 125 x 45 cm, ironing board covers 122 x 38 cm or the UK size chart.
How do I stop a cover slipping once it is the right size?
Anchor the nose first, then tighten from underneath. Slip the nose pocket over the pointed end, pull the elasticated edge evenly down both sides, then tighten the drawcord and clip the underboard straps until the surface is flat.
Re-tighten after your first ironing session, as the layers settle. A non-slip backing also helps: the ROBINAZ cover has one as its fourth layer, against the board.
Why do I get board lines on my shirts?
Lines usually mean the board's shape is pressing through. With a thin or worn cover, the hard frame or mesh underneath can show through onto damp fabric under the heat and pressure of the iron.
Padding is the fix. A cover with cushioning between the garment and the board spreads the pressure. The ROBINAZ cover has four layers — cotton top, felt, foam and non-slip backing — giving roughly 6–7 mm of padding. Read ironing board cover and padding for more.
Why are there creases or ridges on my clothes?
Wrinkles in the cover transfer to the garment. If the cover has bunched up, folded at the edges or was refitted while damp, every ridge in it can press a line into the fabric.
Check the cover lies flat with no wrinkles before you start ironing. Smooth it from the nose towards the flat end and tighten the drawcord again if needed.
What causes a shiny or scorched cover?
Shine and scorch marks build up on a cover's top surface over time. Once the surface is marked, it can transfer to delicate fabrics or leave a shine on dark clothes.
Washing can freshen a cover that is simply dirty: machine wash the ROBINAZ cover at 30°C on a gentle cycle and air dry it, without tumble drying. Washing will not remove a scorch, though. See how to wash and care for an ironing board cover.
When should I replace the cover?
Replace it when adjusting no longer helps. Signs include scorch marks or shine that do not wash out, elastic that no longer holds the cover tight, padding that feels flat and hard, or a surface that keeps marking your clothes.
A new cover renews both the surface and the padding at once. The ROBINAZ ironing board cover is a 4-layer padded cotton cover sold and delivered by Amazon UK; measure your board first so it fits.
