Padded vs thin ironing board covers: what difference do the layers make?
What is the difference between a padded and a thin ironing board cover?
A thin cover is little more than fabric over the board, so it feels hard and the metal mesh can show through. A padded cover adds cushioning layers under the top fabric, which gives clothes a softer, more even surface to be pressed against.
Budget covers often use only a thin layer of foam, which can feel almost as hard as the bare board. A good padded cover starts at around 5 mm of padding. The ROBINAZ cover reaches roughly 6–7 mm across its four layers.
What do the four layers in the ROBINAZ cover do?
The ROBINAZ cover has four layers: a 100% cotton top, felt, foam and a non-slip backing. The cotton is the surface you iron on, the felt and foam cushion the fabric, and the backing helps hold the cover in place on the board.
The cotton top has no chemical coating. Beneath it, the felt padding cushions the board frame so it does not imprint on darker fabrics, and the foam layer adds bounce and helps steam spread through the fabric. The non-slip backing keeps the cover steady during longer ironing sessions, together with the drawcord and the two underboard straps.
Do I need a padded ironing board cover?
For anything more than a quick touch-up, a padded cover helps. Padding cushions clothes so buttons and seams press into it rather than against a hard surface, and it stops the board's mesh pattern from showing through on thin cotton or linen.
If you mostly iron shirts, bedding or anything with buttons, the difference is easy to feel. On a hard, thin cover, buttons sit proud and the fabric around them is difficult to press flat. On a padded cover, the button sinks slightly into the padding and the fabric around it lies flatter.
Is a thicker cover always better?
Not always. Very thick covers can let clothes sink in, which makes creases and pleats harder to press crisply. A medium padding thickness, such as the 6–7 mm of the ROBINAZ cover, aims to be soft enough to cushion and firm enough for sharp collars.
When you compare covers, look at what the padding is made of as well as how thick it is, check that the top layer is cotton rather than a coated fabric, and make sure the cover will fit your board. Most UK boards are 125 × 45 cm or 122 × 38 cm; our size guide explains how to measure.
How do I choose the right padded cover?
Check three things: the number and type of layers, a cotton top surface, and a secure fit for your board size. Then measure your board using our size guide.
